Marine monitoring systems in particular, but also for internal waters, must always be considered as special projects.

Each system must fulfil specific demands which are dependant upon:

• number and distribution of the monitoring stations
• measurement parameters
• mode of communication with the land-based stations
• atmospheric conditions (depth, meteo-marine conditions, etc)

Because of these variations in parameters no one system may serve all purposes.

To simplify, one can hypothesize three types of systems:

Monitoring system for open waters

Monitoring system for protected basins

Monitoring system for sea beds
